Brief Encounters

666 Park Avenue

2012-2013; 1 season; 13 episodes

Manhattan real estate is hell. With the expense and the lack of space and the co-op boards. Ugh. But at least it's not, you know, actual Hell. Yeah, like literally Hell. With the fire and the blood and the brimstone. And, sure, Vanessa Williams is like a really hot Satanist, but... still, evil. Starring Terry O'Quinn, Rachael Taylor and Dave Annable.

Birds of Prey

2002-2003; 1 season; 13 episodes

An ill-conceived adaptation of the cult DC comic, Birds of Prey cribbed some of the worst elements of more successful shows, creating a messy and ultimately uneventful action series. There was a little bit of intrigue and ideas that seemed promising, but the show was canceled before they were fully realized. Starring Ashley Scott, Dina Meyer and Rachel Skarsten.

Dirty Sexy Money

2007-2009; 2 seasons; 23 episodes

It had the greatest title of a TV show ever, but it never completely became the salacious, glitzy melodrama it should have been. Don't get me wrong, Dirty Sexy Money was still an entertaining night-time soap with a universally wonderful cast, but lacked that certain something that could have made it a hit. Starring Peter Krause, Donald Sutherland and Natalie Zea.

Hunted

2012; 1 season; 8 episodes

Sam Hunter is Our Lady of Perpetual Poutiness, knocking down terrorists and criminals with one contrived thrust of her lips. Okay, because this show takes itself way too seriously, she's actually an operative for a private intelligence agency, who was set up and shot by someone presumably on her own team, and now carries around a chip on her shoulder the size of Mars. Oh, and she lost a baby during the shooting, too. It's all about the emotional baggage, people. Starring Melissa George, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Stephen Dillane.

The Others

2000; 1 season; 13 episodes

A sophisticated supernatural drama, The Others is one of my favorite 'canceled-ahead-of-its-time' shows, centering on a collection of eccentric mediums drawn together by fate and together solving ghostly mysteries each week. Somebody wonderful has uploaded the series to YouTube, so check 'em out. NBC initially ran the show out of order, and I'm reviewing in the order the show intended. Meaning continuity actually exists this time around! Starring Julianne Nicholson, Gabriel Macht and Bill Cobbs.

Ringer

2011-2012; 1 season; 22 episodes

Presumably to make up for the fact that she's been M.I.A. for the last couple of years, the star of Buffy the Vampire Slayer returns to television playing twin sisters: one rich and glamorous, the other troubled and vulnerable. Events conspire that lead one twin to inhabit the life of the other, creating a parade of fake-outs and muddled plot twists along the way. Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ioan Gruffudd and Kristoffer Polaha.

Undercovers

2010; 1 season; 13 episodes

A show that should have been great, could have been great... but wasn't great at all. Undercovers was a short-lived espionage drama from the J.J. Abrams wheelhouse that struggled to match its Alias pedigree and stumbled around in tired standalone stories week after week. I guess beautiful lead actors doesn't instantly translate into TV gold. Starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Boris Kodjoe and Gerald McRaney.
