Pretty entertaining despite a feeling of not knowing which direction it wants to go in, Fallen Angel has some intriguing storylines, but the promise of a Predator-style hunt for an invisible monster through the woods ends up a more intimate analysis of a paranoid abductee. A little disappointing, but never boring.
Max was a fun character, somebody with a shaggy, obvious-UFO-nerd appearance, but with some real sadness underneath. Ultimately, he's a victim of alien abduction, and I was surprisingly affected by his eventual disappearance at the end of the episode. The fact that it was covered up helped too, the feds again making sure the truth stays silent.
The threat against The X-Files itself was a little redundant. Mulder certainly didn't seem to care, and I think that, ten episodes in, it's too early to threaten the foundation of the series like that. At least if you're trying to get the audience to actually give a damn.
One of those early alien-centric conspiracy episodes which don’t have any significant bearing on the "grand scheme of things", Fallen Angel does work as a tense thriller, but there's nothing particularly deeper here. Rating C+
